Revelation 20:6

Revelation 20:6

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:6 King James Version)

“Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:6 New International Version)

The first resurrection and the second death are separated by at least 1000 years. The emphasis in this verse is clearly on the resurrection of Old Testament believers who have died before Pentecost and the resurrection of Tribulation believers who have died during the Tribulation, both will be raised from the dead at the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and they will reign with Christ for 1000 years. This verse has nothing to do with Church Age believers (Pentecost to the Rapture), although Church Age believers will rule and reign with Christ for a 1000 years also. Church Age believers will go up at the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) and return with Christ at the end of the seven year Tribulation to rule and reign with Christ for 1000 years.

First in verse 6, the “first resurrection” will happen at the end of the seven year Tribulation period and right before Christ’s 1000 year millennial reign. The bodies of all Old Testament believers before Pentecost and the bodies of the Tribulation believers will be raised from the dead to rule and reign with Christ for 1000 years.

Second in verse 6, the “second death” has no power. The second death and second resurrection will happen after Christ’s 1000 year millennial reign and after the short time Satan is loosed for a short season to deceive the nations (Revelation 20:7-9). The second death is the second and final time all unbelievers of all the ages will be separated from God eternally. (In this case here “death” means separation from God.) Physical death separates the body from the soul and spirit; spiritual death separates the unbeliever’s soul and spirit from God. All unbelievers of all the ages will experience two deaths (that is, they will be separated from God at both deaths). In the first death when their bodies physically die, their soul and spirit will go to a temporary holding place called Sheol (Old Testament word for hell) or hates (New Testament word for hell). The second death will happen at the Great White throne Judgment (of Christ). At this judgment all unbelievers will be separated from God eternally. At the Great Throne Judgment (of Christ) the soul and spirit of all unbelievers will be reunited with their bodies. So, all unbelievers of all the ages will appear before Christ at the Great White Throne Judgment (physically, spiritually, and bodily). The purpose of the Great White Throne Judgment is to determine the degree of punishment all unbelievers will receive in the final hell – the Lake of Fire. When an unbeliever in Christ is sent to the Lake of Fire they go there bodily, not just spiritually.

There are eternal degrees of punishment in hell for unbelievers in Christ as there are eternal degrees of rewards in Heaven for believers in Christ.

Personally, I cannot understand why anybody would want to go to hell. Hell is eternal heat; hell is loneliness; hell is eternal darkness; hell is eternal punishment; hell is eternal separation from God.

How do I get to Heaven?

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever (your name) believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
