The Myth of The Moderate

If I've seen it once, I know I've seen it a million times...Someone whose opinions are 100% in line with Liberal ideology, in many instances to extreme; such as advocating unlimited partial birth abortions or blanket amnesty for illegal aliens, or a total ban on gun ownership, and abolishing the death penalty. Now, to me; that kind of political thinking is fairly extreme left wing, liberal stuff; and, that's fine if that's your opinion. This is still America for the most part, and we have a wide spectrum of political beliefs and are guaranteed the right of expressing them. As well we should. I think that robust and honest political discourse based on the issues that the Country faces is necessary because it is through that crucible that we can develop the ideas and policies that look to the Nation's interests as a whole rather than one Party or the other. So look, here's the deal....

If you believe in unlimited partial birth abortions; or abolishing the death penalty or a total moratorium on any kind of oil exploration or drilling in America off shore or inland, that's great. If you believe in a centrally controlled, socialist style economy, or a cradle to grave entitlement society, I think that's awesome. If you feel comfortable with foreign policy decisions motivated by appeasement and denial of fundamentalist Islam's danger to the West; I would have to disagree, but I dont think anyone should be hauled off to prison in the middle of the night without a trial, or shoved up against a wall and shot because of it.

But do me a favor, please...Dont subscribe to the above noted kinds of political thinking, then look me in the eye and say with a straight face, "I'm a Moderate, basically...."

No...No, you're not. I know you feel like you are a moderate because most everyone around you basically sees things the same way you do. And, if the political ideas in question are ideas commonly held to by the majority, they are not considered extreme, they're looked at as conventional thinking. From my perspective, however that kind of thinking is pretty extreme. I'm a conservative by inclination, and those radical concepts like we just talked about seem counter productive to the best interests of the Nation. Now I know that just made a lot of people mad, and they'll start saying how easy it would be to turn that idea around and say the same thing about conservatives...

The only problem with that is that most conservatives I know don't think of themselves as moderates. Most conservatives I know refer to themselves as conservative; so that deflection wouldn't work. I dont think there is such a thing as a true Moderate. There are many folks who lean center-right or center-left, based on whatever their life experience or studies have shown them; but I have don't think I have ever met a "moderate" who was able to select a true balance between ideologies and call it sound and just for the Country...There are very few things in life that intellectually honest people feel truly ambivalent about. We all come down on one side or the other on issues that mean something to us; and even on things that dont matter we have a need to make our opinions known...Look at American Idol, or Funniest Home Videos; we have opinions on every damned thing...Like I said, it's America; we can do that.

But be honest, for crying out loud...If you spend your time defending or apologizing for liberal thinking, and attack or criticize conservative ideas, you are not a moderate, ok? You really arent. You're fundamentally a Liberal. Embrace it... Dont be ashamed of it; if those are your beliefs, then those are your beliefs. Get out there and defend your ideas as a Liberal. You'll never be able to prove your case with condescension or sarcasm or name calling; you'll need facts and intellectual honesty...Of the two, I think intellectual honesty is hardest to cultivate; it certainly was in my case, but you cannot have honest discourse without it.

when the GOP key votes are on the line...
the RINOs betray the Party 80% of the time...apparently w/o consequences.

Unfortunately, there is a sizable segment of our citizenry who are "moderate" in that they have no opinion - they are essentially ignorant of the issues and, if they vote, make decisions based on "likability." We had a large field of conservative candidates for the presidential primaries and the mos...
